MA candidates are expected to possess the BA degree and have a background knowledge of American culture.

Requirements

MA students may select either the Plan A or Plan B program. Students must complete 30 credit hours as follows:

Plan A (Thesis)

2 AMST graduate seminars
4 graduate seminars in AMST or other allied graduate electives in a department other than AMST with the approval of the Graduate Chair (one 400-level course permitted)
2 Capstone AMST 700 - Thesis Research Credits: V
thesis defense

2 required core graduate seminars

AMST 600 - Approaches to American Studies Credits: 3
AMST 601 - Patterns of American Cultures Credits: 3

Plan B (Non-thesis)

2 AMST graduate seminars
6 graduate seminars in AMST or other allied graduate electives in a department other than AMST with the approval of the Graduate Chair (one 400-level course permitted)
written and oral examinations in two fields

2 required core graduate seminars

AMST 600 - Approaches to American Studies Credits: 3
AMST 601 - Patterns of American Cultures Credits: 3
